Veggie Tales

Veggie Tales
Olivia Baker

If plants could talk, the stories they'd tell. Well, it turns out they do, kind of; you just might need to do some dissecting and deep thinking, as Pre-First learned last week.

Under the direction of their teacher, Ms. Sarah Hanson, Pre-First Grade has been learning that science can be cool as a cucumber, or as in this case, piquant as a pepper!

One of ICSB's learning standards in Pre-First Grade is to observe plants and, through those observations, identify their parts and understand what they need to survive. This exploration has been a terrific, and at times even tasty, experience for our young learners. Ms. Hanson has used time-lapse videos, books, and plant dissections to engage the students. Without a doubt, fruit and vegetable dissections have been the class favorite!

While cutting apart these fruits and vegetables, students used all five senses to observe these plants' exterior and interior parts. These multi-sensory explorations sparked curiosity, fostered critical thinking, and encouraged meaningful conversations. It was endearing for Ms. Hanson to see her students' excitement while discovering seeds, identifying different textures, and even noticing the smells of freshly cut produce.

This unit has truly brought about some unforgettable "aha!" moments in the classroom. Her favorite was seeing students connect the dots between their observations in the physical world and God's purposeful, creative, and caring design. Their realization that plants grow just as He intended opened up meaningful discussions about creation and the beauty of the natural world.

It was a joy for Ms. Hanson to watch their sense of wonder grow with every observation and discovery. We’re grateful for Ms. Hanson's investment in nurturing their curiosity and faith through this unit! It turns out it's not only in cartoons that vegetables tell stories of faith and learning, but in real life, too.
