The SALT of the Earth

The SALT of the Earth

At ICSB, sports are about more than points and podiums; they’re an opportunity to be the light and flavor of Christ. That’s the heart behind SALT, a new ICSB initiative led by Mr. Peter Lash.

The ICSB Student Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) exists to serve our athletic community through event support, mentorship, and spiritual leadership. Guided by Matthew 5:13-16, we strive to model Christlike character, encourage younger athletes, and create a welcoming environment that reflects sportsmanship, service, and teamwork.

As their mission statement declares above, SALT focuses on "equipping and empowering students to become disciples who make disciples" at ICSB and beyond, and championing servant leaders on and off the court. Guided by the message of Matthew 5:13-16, SALT encourages student-athletes to be the “salt of the earth” and “light of the world,” by reflecting Christlike character in every area of their lives. Whether in athletic competition or the classroom, SALT members are committed to cultivating a culture of sportsmanship, service, and community. Their weekly meetings are 25 minutes long and involve discussion-based Bible Study.

We analyze themes of leadership and discipleship, equipping students to fulfill the Great Commission by making disciples and being servant-leaders on their sports teams. We also highlight opportunities to serve on campus. Additionally, we’ve had several college athletes join us via Zoom to speak with students about leadership.

Through SALT, our student-athletes have a myriad of options to choose from to practice - not just their passing and three-point shot, but also what they preach. They do this through service opportunities like leading FCA small group Bible studies for Middle Grade students, organizing and facilitating sports clinics for Early Grades students, refereeing Early Grades basketball games, welcoming/greeting the opposing teams we host during home games, assisting Athletic Director Mr. John Burgess during home sporting events, keeping time and score during games, planning major sports events like ICSB's Annual Winter Classic, Family Field Day, Alumni games etc. Some of our SALT student leaders even serve as team managers or assistant coaches for our athletic teams.

Serving with Salt as the Varsity Girls Volleyball Team manager was an opportunity that helped me grow as a disciple of Christ and as a person in general. With each practice, I was blessed with the opportunity to serve the girls playing and build such genuine sweet relationships with them, as well as the coaching staff. One of the best highlights was just seeing their growth athletically but also spiritually throughout the season and experiencing their highs and lows with them. Through this opportunity I got to interact with girls I normally would not have and those interactions have now blossomed into such wholesome friendships.

As SALT aims to equip every ICSB student-athlete to model Christ through servant leadership and intentional discipleship, it helps shape a generation of students who lead not only by skill but by example, approaching wins, losses, and life with humility, integrity, and grace.

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
