Summer Reading Challenge - our kids rose to the challenge!

Candace Jefferies

This past summer we had 24 students participate in our Summer Reading Challenge!  We celebrated their hard work and presented prizes and awards during our lower school chapel times this week.

Everyone who participated received a goodie bag with treats including candy, a library bookmark, and a pencil.

The students in each grade who read the most books were also rewarded with a Libri gift card.  Those students are:
  • 1st grade - Vince M.
  • 2nd grade - Bori M.
  • 3rd grade - Holly B.
  • 5th grade - Dorka A.
  • 6th grade - Allister K.
  • 7th grade - Jay D.

For 8th grade, we had a very close race between three students who read SO MUCH over the summer that we had to award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes. Altogether Ethan R., Annora K., and Susie M. read 205 books and over 66,000 pages!

Some of the most popular books selected by the students were The Baby-Sitters Club by Gale Galligan and Raina Telgemeier and the Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan.

This optional program is in its 3rd year and it is great to see our participation growing! Summer reading helps create habits of reading for enjoyment. It is proven that a healthy diet of reading strengthens reading ability, vocabulary, and comprehension. Readers also grow in empathy and knowledge of the world.
