Lions, Cheetahs, Elephants, and Zebras explore the facts of (the) matter.

Last Friday, Second-grade teacher Ms. Rudolph invited parents and grandparents into her safari-themed classroom for "Science-In-Action" Day. This special event was filled with science experiments and games parents could participate in with their children.

"Science-in-Action" Day focused on the student's unit on Matter & Changes in Matter. They conducted four different experiments on rotation. Each of these experiments reviewed a different aspect of their past unit on matter.

Students and their families worked in teams (Lions, Cheetahs, Elephants, and Zebras) and rotated through four experiments. They classified objects based on properties like color, shape, and texture. They also discovered how objects made of small pieces (like Legos) can be taken apart and rebuilt into something new. To investigate the effects of heating and cooling, they compared how butter, eggs, and water respond differently to temperature changes. Finally, they analyzed materials to determine which properties—flexibility, strength, and absorbency—suit them best for specific tasks.

The highlight of the day was the trivia challenge! Their Second-grade teacher quizzed each team based on what they had learned, and points were awarded for correct answers. After some friendly competition, the Lions claimed victory! It looks like lions are not only the king of the jungle but the science lab, too!

It was a great turnout! Nine out of eleven families participated! Unfortunately, one student was out sick. A few students were joined by their grandparents from the United States, making the experience even more special.

This event was a great example of how ICSB teachers incorporate the school's core values, community, growth, and integrity in their teaching. By inviting parents and grandparents, Ms. Rudolph helped build community. The science experiments facilitated growth in students' understanding of the fundamentals of physics and chemistry, inspiring wonder about the world we live in and the One who made it. Finally, she displayed integrity by giving parents and grandparents a glimpse into their child's learning experience at ICSB. Thank you to our wonderful second-grade teacher and all the parents who made this day so special by participating. The fact of the matter is science can be fun!
