Mission Possible: Service in Disguise

Mission Possible: Service in Disguise
Olivia Baker

The mission was clear: raise 750,000 forints to support the Salvation Army’s Homeless Men’s Ministry. The objective: fund and deliver Christmas bags.

Forint War 2025, organized by ICSB's National Honor Society members and sponsored by Mrs. Kate Smith and Mrs. Rebecca Lingenhoel, transformed students into undercover operatives.

Operating under the codename Service in Disguise, students' mission, which they chose to accept, was to raise 750,000 forints to supply Christmas bags filled with snacks, essentials, and handwritten messages (not the self-destructing kind) to the Salvation Army's Homeless Men’s Ministry.

Covert giving was encouraged, as student "spies" were instructed to deploy generosity discreetly, without drawing too much attention. These "orders" were based on a Bible Verse, but in Upper School, it was not yet revealed which part of scripture served as the basis for this approach to the operation. Our veteran Forint War agents in Upper School had the additional task of cracking the code and finding the Bible Verse that was the key to the success of their mission. Each day this week, a little bit more of the verse was revealed to assist them in solving the puzzle. Meanwhile, our youngest "spy kids" focused on honing their disguises through the Lower School Service in Disguise Photobooth.

Donation boxes appeared across campus. Like in the Forint Wars of the past, coins added points, bills subtracted them. Houses competed for control of the leaderboard. Students had until today, Friday, December 5th, to complete the mission of raising the money. In one James Bond film, Bond's tech operative states:

I'll hazard I can do more damage on my laptop sitting in my pajamas before my first cup of Earl Grey than you can do in a year in the field.

Q to James Bond, in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures'Skyfall

This might be true in most other fundraising operations, where online giving is an option. However, this operation exclusively required field agents, as it was cash only.

Which House won? Was the mission completed and the target of 750,000 Ft acquired? You may ask. That's still classified. Report back to ICSB Headquarters on Monday to be read in on these details of the operation.

The Bible Verse, however, is now declassified, as of today. The Top Secret code, and the inspiration behind this covert approach to generosity, was Matthew 6:3-4.

But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Matthew 6:3-4 NIV
