Hardfought Hardware

ICSB's Volleyball Teams competed in their final DVAC Tournaments on Saturday, November 8th.

Varsity Volleyball Players Praying

The Varsity Volleyball Girls aced their games at AISB against BIS Budapest and CIS, earning them their spot in the 3rd place game. Tensions were high in this close battle for a place on the podium. The girls played well, but narrowly lost to ICSV,  placing fourth in the tournament. However, the peace and character they radiated after this difficult loss, as they ended the day in prayer, was a true and powerful testament to a treasure more valuable than any trophy.

Meanwhile, in Vienna, the Junior Varsity Girls showed grit, earning a 2-0 win over the AIS Salzburg after close losses to AIS Vienna and QSI International School of Bratislava.

The Varsity Volleyball Boys had an incredible season. They won every set they played all season up until their last DVAC, and won every game except their last - the championship. On the day of their final DVAC, they defeated the hosts, BIS Budapest, along with BIS Bratislava and AISV, advancing them to the championship game. After a sweeping season of wins, they suffered a hard-fought loss to VIS, placing 2nd. Congratulations on your silver trophy!

I was very impressed with their character this year. When one player made a mistake, the other five on the court helped them shake it off. I saw them call each other higher all season. If all of the pressure was only on your shoulders, it would be a nightmare. But volleyball is a team sport, and how they treated each other on the court helped them overcome multiple major deficits. Their trust and reliance on one another led to show-stopping victories. That's not something you can coach in the plan of 3 months, so that's a huge testament to how they play as a team.

Capping off the weekend, the Junior Varsity Boys dominated at home, going undefeated and earning 1st place with a clean sweep of all four matches. Congratulations on winning the Championship!

The JV boys showed impressive team work, consistency, and capability as evidence of their character and growth. They played their hearts out throughout the season which culminated in a powerful final DVAC tournament winning 8 straight sets to take home the gold.

This past Saturday, November 15th, the Varsity Boys Soccer Team concluded its first season back after a two-year hiatus, thanks to Coach Paulo Williams Santos taking the reins. They played well against tough competition, falling in hard-fought matches against Britannica IS, BIS Bratislava, and St. Gilgen IS.

The Varsity Girls Soccer Team played a successful season, full of wins, and earned their first trophy since the program's resurgence last year. After dominating AIS Salzburg in a 5-0 win, and losing a close, 2-1 game to ICS Vienna, they tied their 3rd place game in regular playing time; thus, leaving the winner to be decided by penalties, a DVAC first. Still tied after five rounds, the shootout moved to a sudden-death round. Nadiia Z. was up first, scoring a perfect penalty in the bottom left corner. The pressure was now on goalie Rosie Z., who, like many times before, made the save. Thus, a day of tireless teamwork from everyone led them to the 3rd place trophy. Congratulations girls!

Our team fought extremely hard and it was awesome to see how everyone improved. We especially wanted to win this game for Lydia.

Nadiia Z., Varsity Girls Soccer Team Co-Captain
