Early Grades Music - A Collaborative Effort

Early Grades Music - A Collaborative Effort
Candace Jefferies

Our Early Grades students have experienced music education this school year from a variety of teachers and from a variety of approaches.

Several of our staff, Mr. Rob Roman, Mrs. Gyeongran Kim, and Mrs. Beth Ferguson, have come together to teach the students musical elements and theory and introduce a first instrument, the recorder!

Mr. Roman teaches our Pre1st, 1st, and 2nd graders music theory fundamentals. He has the students consider the notes' sounds before adding the lyrics. He shared, "I've been very excited to have the opportunity to cover these classes since I have a music background. I'm enjoying the opportunity to be involved, especially during our preparation for the spring program. I'm always fascinated by music's effect on students and all the cross-curricular connections we've been discovering. Our greatest moments so far this year have been our rhythmic exercises, as well as learning songs for our upcoming performance. The students have been so motivated and excited to participate!"

Students in 4th grade learn to play recorder with Ms. Kim. She motivates them to practice with the opportunity to earn color ties to display on their recorder. Each color represents a level of mastery - the martial art of learning!

Mrs. Kim said, "The greatest moment in music class is when I see that students are ready to learn. I was especially glad to hear, "Mrs. Kim, I practiced recorder at home and brought my recorder." The 4th graders love music, and they have joy in their hearts. That's why I was able to teach this class."

Mrs. Ferguson teaches our 3rd and 5th graders various music concepts through interactive exercises and games to expose the students to different beats, patterns, and musical styles.

We are thankful for the dedication of these instructors and proud of the progress our students have achieved in music. This experience will enhance their musical abilities and contribute to their overall development. Music education is a priority and tradition at ICSB, and we love seeing our students grow and excel in this God-given creative and expressive art form.

Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything" - Ephesians 5:19-20
