Poetry - Words and Visuals

Poetry - Words and Visuals
Candace Jefferies

Ms. Wingler's fifth-grade class explored various poetry forms throughout the year and wrapped up the study by creating visuals of their poetic words.

The final assignment of the year tasked the students to craft "sense poems" — verses inspired by the five senses — focusing on sensory subjects or experiences they know much about. The various topics the students embraced included soccer, birthday parties, flower fields, basketball games, and camping. They then created visual art pieces communicating their poems, effectively blending their words with a visual expression.

Ms. Wingler gave the students creative freedom to express their poetry through their art pieces. They thoroughly enjoyed displaying their artwork and poems in a gallery-style setting, inviting others to tour their "poetry museum." The whole exercise gave the students a rich and memorable learning experience of poetry forms.
