Students Share, Community Shows They Care

Classrooms transformed into exhibit galleries, as our community of all ages took time to pause, listen to, and encourage one another, and even enjoy a little singing.

Celebration of Learning brought Lower School students, staff, and families together for a meaningful morning centered on reflection, heartening and shared learning, bringing a joyful close to the semester. Across Early and Middle Grades, students prepared presentations highlighting their growth and creativity over the semester.

What is Celebration of Learning?

Before detailing the events of this day, one might wonder what the heart is behind this ICSB tradition. In the words of our Lower School Principal, Mr. David Kelley:

The Celebration of Learning is a time at the end of each semester to celebrate student growth with integrity as a learning community. It also has the goal to promote the greater learning community by intentionally providing time and space for teachers, students, and parents to spend time together in celebration.

House Event

Before students presented their favorite projects, all of Lower School gathered by Houses in the gym for a little time of movement and amusement through community-building activities. They played interactive games like Four Corners, Red Light, Green Light, and trivia challenges, through which students learned some very interesting facts about their teachers. Pre-1-8 students participated side by side in this team-building bonanza, providing a fun space for students to use any excess energy to connect in ways beyond the academic and strengthen relationships across the Lower School.

Presentations and Celebrations

Next, Early Grades students went to the Middle Grades floor to learn from their older schoolmates. Then, Middle Grades visited the Early Grades floor to support and learn from our youngest learners. Thus, all Lower School students seized the opportunity to see learning beyond their own classrooms and build connections across grade levels. These visits gave students a wider perspective on learning and helped build a sense of continuity and belonging across the school.

Families were invited to join, giving students the opportunity to explain their projects, discuss their growth, and take pride in their progress. Parents were highly encouraged to engage not only with their own child's but also with the presentations of multiple students, listen to their reflections, and celebrate progress together. Affirmation tables invited students and families to write multiple encouraging notes, creating a culture of kindness and recognition that carried through the entire event.

Teachers and support staff helped guide conversations, manage transitions, and ensure a welcoming experience for all. In fourth grade, this even included students, led by Ms. Christiane Santos, singing a few songs they had prepared for their families. The morning concluded with a thoughtful wrap-up, as affirmation notes were collected and shared with homeroom teachers so students could take these words of encouragement back into their classrooms.

The goals are for students to be able to reflect honestly on the learning process and their own progress towards learning goals, including "fabulous flops," and to explain their growth process to their parents and other students, so that others can join in the celebration.

Mr. David Kelley, Lower School Principal

Thus, the Celebration of Learning reminded us that learning is not just about outcomes, but about the process and the relationships that support students every step of the way. Thank you to our students, staff, and families for partnering in this meaningful experience and for supporting a culture of encouragement, growth, and shared learning.
