A record number of 3rd through 8th-grade students competed in this year's beloved Battle of the Books this past Saturday!

ICSB's 3rd–8th-grade students tested their reading skills at Battle of the Books this past Saturday. The tournament kicked off in the cafeteria, where our book brigades competed in a fast-paced quiz challenge based on the books they had read.

Back in February, students who signed up were placed into groups and given a list of books to read. Students could divide up the books on that list among their team members so that all of the books on the list would be read by at least one person in their group. They had two months to complete their reading. Then, this past weekend, the games began. The teams were quizzed on their knowledge of these books. Middle Grades were quizzed through seven rounds in three classrooms, while Early Grades did five rounds in two.

Competition was fierce this year as teams showcased their literary knowledge and quick thinking. In the Middle Grades division, first place went to Neilsen's Nerds, a strong squad consisting of  Dorka A., Holland G., Anna P., Bria P., and Ferko S. Pilkey's Predators won the Early Grades battle. Their winning warriors were Ruth S., Bella S., Hedi H., Matvii M., Kai J., and Kira Z. Each team demonstrated skillful collaboration and literary insight throughout the competition.

This year, our students read a total of 357 books—a remarkable achievement reflecting their commitment, teamwork, and love of reading. Contestants had to have read a minimum of four books as the requirement for entry; however, many of them far exceeded that goal. A handful of students went above and beyond by reading every single book in their category. This incredible accomplishment belongs to Charlotte L., Anna C., Mary L., Dorka A., Holland G., Daniel D., and Joshua K. Their dedication is inspiring, and they will reap the benefits with all that they have learned.

We are grateful for our parent volunteers, who helped make this event successful by supporting reading questions, timing, scoring, and lunch service. We also extend our deepest thanks to our Librarian, Mrs. Tricia Fraser, for her contagious energy and enthusiasm for reading and how it continues to ignite a love of books in our students. Congratulations to our young book battalions for their valiant effort, remarkable enthusiasm, and outstanding achievements in this year’s Battle of the Books.

I appreciate all the students who read so diligently, pushing themselves to read more than normal on top of all their other school work and activities. We had a record amount of participation, with 52 students showing up for the Battle on March 29th. I'm already excited for next year's Battle!
