Top Tips for Reading With a Bilingual Child

How do you encourage a love of reading in every language spoken in your home?

I came across an article recently that had some great tips.

They are:

  1. Let your children choose what book to read. Kids naturally get more excited about reading a book that they've picked out.
  2. Try reading the same story in two languages. This is a great way to strengthen both languages.
  3. Dive into a legend. Legends are not only amazing stories, but they can also connect us to a culture.

When it comes to English books to read with your children, the ICSB library has you covered with over 8000 titles!

But what about other languages?

This year, one of our projects is to create a World Languages section, which will have a small selection of books in each of the following languages:

  • Chinese
  • German
  • Hungarian
  • Korean
  • Russian
  • Ukrainian

We are still looking for people who can help us choose and acquire books in Chinese and Russian. If you'd like to help with this, drop me a note at library@icsbudapest.org.
