For many Americans, Thanksgiving is a favorite holiday. I think it might be because of all the food.
So many of the holiday memories are set around food. Eating a ton of turkey, piling on the mashed potatoes and gravy, waiting for grandma's famous pie to come out of the oven. And of course, leftovers for the next several days.
I don't think it is really the food that is the issue, delicious as it always is. The food probably just enhances our memories of happy times with family and thankfulness for all that the Lord has done for us.
Be thankful for a few things and soon you will find that you have a lot to be thankful for.
I don't know about you, but even in this season, it can be easy to just give thanks without much thought. Even if we acknowledge God, we often do it without offering it as "a praise of thanksgiving." In an attempt to make sure to direct my thanks towards the One that deserves all praise and thanks, I wanted to find Bible verses that included both ideas. Here are a few examples:
- Colossians 3:16
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
- Hebrews 12:28-29
"Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our 'God is a consuming fire."
- 1 Chronicles 29:10-13
“Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours.Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name."
- Psalm 69:30
"I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving."
- Psalm 95:1-3
"Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods."
- Psalm 100:4
"Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name."
My prayer this year is that we will be thankful of course, but that we would also praise the One that deserves all of our praise and all of our thanks.
I am thankful for Jesus dying on the cross, my family, and my best friend.
I am thankful for family and friends. And my dog.
I am thankful that we are not in online school and that basketball season has started.
