The Issue on the Table

Susan Cooper

"Were the Spanish justified in attacking the Aztec?" The great war debate opened the floor for students to think critically about the topic of war and its place in world history.

Students in Ms. Endicott's History 8 class participated in their first formal debate and examined the impact of European explorers on American Civilizations during the Age of Exploration. Students worked to examine evidence from primary sources and build the argument for their group's position. A panel of student judges carefully evaluated each group's presentation of their argument to determine a debate winner.

Debates give students opportunity to test thoughts and views against that of their peers. They also require in-depth research and analysis of information on a specific subject matter. These are both important aspects of becoming an Active Thinker, which is one of ICSB's goals for expected student outcomes.
