Young Minds, Big Discussions
Amy Leamon

5th grade has started Literature Circles where they lead their own book discussions.  We are learning together by reading the same book as a class, but soon they will have a different book for each group.  We had lots of interesting conversations led by our “Discussion Directors”...

Students are learning to connect to a book through the various roles of Literature Circles.  Whether they are leading the discussion with their own open ended questions about character motives, making connections to the text by sharing their own experiences similar to the characters, or finding the author’s vividly written passages and vocabulary to point out and explain to their group, each group member has a unique contribution to the session!  Connections are deeper when everyone shares and listens, and responsibility is increased when your group is counting on you to do your part!  Great work, 5th Grade!
