Celebrating Principals' Month with Mr. Southwell

Szilvi Lázár

As we celebrate Principals' Month, we invite you to get to know Mr. Southwell a little better before the "Coffee Time with the Principal", coming up in the next couple weeks.

Mr. Southwell has served at #ICSBudapest since 2018, becoming the Upper School principal in 2019. Before coming to ICSB he served as a public-school teacher for 15 years. He and his wife, Fawn, have seven children with the school age children attending ICSB. His love for students and desire to see them succeed are evident in the way that he serves the teachers, parents, and students at ICSB. Michael holds a Master of Arts in Educational Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education.

What did you want to become when you were in school?

When I was a young child I wanted to be a teacher. When I began college I studied to become a youth minister and served as a youth pastor for a small church for four years. After two years of college I changed to become an education major and eventually graduated with a degree in education.

What sports did you participate in at school?

I played many different sports growing up, including soccer, basketball, baseball, and track and field. I was part of the high school team for soccer and track and field. I was primarily a defender in soccer and ran sprints for track. I went on to run track in college, competing in the 100m, 200m, and 4X100m relay at the collegiate level.

What do you enjoy most about your work as principal?

God has increased my sphere of responsibility by transitioning me to the role of principal. I now have not only a wonderful group of students under my care, but also a great team of educators that look to me as their leader. There are many things that I love about being the principal, but my greatest joy comes when I am able to help students or staff to grow in confidence and find success.

Being a principal can be demanding and stressful work. My trust in the Lord and the support of my family enable me to serve in this role. I am thankful for the support of my wife, Fawn, and all of our kids. Without them by my side, loving me and supporting me, I don't know how I would be able to fulfill the responsibilities of this job as ICSB principal.
