Elizabeth Maney

In this Senior Spotlight, meet Elizabeth (Libby) from America, who attended ICSB for seven years.

When you think of high school, what song comes to mind?

I can't put seven years of my life into only one song

What's your favorite TV show or movie?

Captain America: The First Avenger or Cinderella (2015 live-action)

What have you been involved in at ICSB?

Dance team, Musical, NHS, StuCo, Beta Club, Choir, Ensemble and Art

What's your favorite place on campus and why?

The tables outside of the lunchroom are very nice in good weather. I've sat with my friends there for lunch in the fall and spring for years now and even helped pick a kiwi off of the vines that hang overhead

Share about a teacher(s) and how they have impacted you positively.

  • Mrs. Eding was my teacher for Spanish 1 and 2 and Communications and I love the way she invests in students both inside and outside of the classroom. Mrs. Eding's teaching is clear and engaging, with lots of real-life and Biblical applications. She took the time outside of class to get to know me and hear about my life, making me feel cared for and loved
  • Although Miss Hocutt was never actually my teacher, she started a girls' Bible study for my class in 8th grade after getting to know us through being the choreographer for the musical. Whenever I needed someone to talk to during school, I could go to her for encouragement and wisdom. This Bible study is a big part of how I learned what it looked like to truly walk with god by spending time with him regularly
  • Mrs. Culbertson is my girls' weights teacher this year and was also the sponsor for the dance team. She has encouraged me many times this year, whether it was with dance team or other parts of my life. I could always count on her to help me verbally process dance team decisions and overall help me be the best leader I could be

Each of these teachers has impacted my life so much, and there are so many more who have too that I didn't mention here

What's your favorite thing or memory about ICSB?

I can't pick just one, but basketball tournaments, dance team, retreats, and musicals have all been the highlights of my time at ICSB

What has been the highlight of your senior year?

So far, the highlight of my senior year has been the Upper School girls' dance team. It was something I had been dreaming about starting back again for years, ever since I was a part of it when Nadya Beyar created the club when I was a freshman. I loved having each of the 13 girls on the team, and getting to know them was even more valuable than the actual dancing part. I looked forward to dance team practices every week during the winter season and sharing something we all enjoyed was special for me

What is an experience you've had at ICSB that you couldn't have had anywhere else?

The high school retreat is an experience that I don't think any other high school has. We were able to spend a few days together as a high school with chapel sessions and small group discussions, sort of like a Christian summer camp, except that we went back to school with those same shared experiences. One of my best memories is going stargazing after the bonfire during my sophomore year when having the retreat wasn't a guarantee because of covid, but it still was able to happen

What are some of the ways you've grown since you first came to ICSB?

I have learned so much since I've been at ICSB. The years here have been the most formational in my life. I have learned how to be a better friend and classmate. I've learned how to face disappointment and still know where my value comes from. I've learned what it means to follow Jesus and how to understand other worldviews and cultures. At ICSB, I learned how to be a leader, but also that it can be a good idea sometimes to take a step back. I've learned how to be welcoming but also how to say goodbyes in a school where people come and go every year. Of course, I am still growing in these things, but I became who I am today during my time at ICSB and in Hungary

Will you be attending college next year?

Yes

Which college(s) have you been accepted to?

Appalachian State University, University of South Carolina, Georgia College, College of Charleston, University of North Georgia, Belmont University, Valdosta State University, Florida State University, University of Mississippi, and Auburn University

Which school will you attend?

 Appalachian State University

What will be your major or area of focus?

I will be majoring in exercise science and minoring in dance

What do you hope to be doing, pursuing in 10 years?

If it is God's plan for me, I will have my doctorate in physical therapy and be helping people recover from injuries and learn to move safely, especially working with dancers. I might be thinking about moving from the U.S. back to Europe ten years from now. I also hope to get to teach dance as a side job
