Mrs Culbertson: This past year, I've had the pleasure of getting to meet with Mrs. Culbertson weekly and I am so grateful to her. She has created a safe place to share my story, be myself, and express who I am without judgment and an eagerness to create a connection. She not only is very dear to my heart, she is also an amazing teacher. She leaves space for different learning styles, she has influenced a spark of interest in academics even despite severe senioritis, she holds space for laughter as a class, and she is a genuinely kind and good person. When I think of my future of studying to be a High School teacher myself, it's teachers like Mrs. Culbertson that I aspire to be like. I am so grateful for our relationship and I couldn't have gotten through senior year without her.

Ms Spence: She started teaching at ICSB my freshman year of high school. Throughout the past four years, she has engaged with me, listened to me, joked around with me, and created a sense of support and safety. I've always admired her ability in teaching and is one of the people who sparked my interest in teaching as a career. Her high energy is so fun in a classroom setting, and she manages us to be engaged even in a senior, 8th-period class. I am so grateful to have gotten to journey through the years of high school with Miss Spence as my teacher.

What’s your favorite thing or memory about ICSB?

My Junior year, 2023, our varsity basketball team took victory in our annual basketball tournament. I remember the moment, the last 2 minutes of our final game. We had a 10-point lead, and all our seniors were on the court, soaking in the last minutes of their last 3-day tournament. The gym was packed with people, the pep band playing along, it was so loud you couldn't even hear yourself think. I remember standing up, cheering, and tears streaming down my face as the buzzer went off. It was such a happy moment and such a good way to say goodbye to my good friends in that year's senior class. I didn't know that that was also going to be my last tournament and basketball season, but I am so glad to have ended it on such an amazing note. Those are going to be the moments that I'll be looking back on as I move on to the next chapter.

What has been the highlight of your senior year?

I loved the high school retreat this year. Although it was stressful having to organize and lead the whole thing, there were a lot of memories made. I loved my small group that I've been able to meet a few times this past year. It was quite memorable to have all the senior girls in one room, staying up til 2 in the morning and eating snacks and ramen while we awaited our plan for the freshman initiation. I loved waking up early with the girls to watch the sunrise. I loved the bonfire, getting to share with people, and getting to hear other's hearts. There were a lot of small and big moments that led to a very fun and memorable last retreat.

What are some of the ways you’ve grown since you first came to ICSB?

Since I have been at ICSB since the 3rd grade, I've found myself growing in authenticity. Especially in a small school, it can be easy to become someone you aren't in order to fit in and make friends. Those expectations are so tempting and look beneficial at first, but it isn't until later that you realize that that takes its toll on you. Looking back, I wish I could have told myself that I shouldn't have to change who I am in order for people to like me, but now, as I am moving on, I know what kind of person I want to be. I am still growing in this, but being at a small school has given me the opportunity to become comfortable with who I am and authentic in everything I do, and I am much happier for it.
