In this #SeniorSpotlight2021, get to know Jillian, a four-year student originally from the US, who is a talented writer, artist and musician.
When you think of high school, what song comes to mind?
"We’re all in this together" from High School Musical
What’s your favorite TV show or movie?
What have you been involved in at ICSB?
Ensemble, chapel team, art, musical.
How long have you been at ICSB?
What’s your favorite place on campus and why?
The basement and garage because I spent so much time down there working on musical sets and running lines. A lot of good memories.
How have your teachers impacted you?
Ms Olandt has spent so much time with me, helping me through AP physics and AP art, always pushing me to do better and to be my best.
Ms Finstrom has always been a wonderful person to see and chat with, ever since the pen competitions began in geometry. I always look forward to seeing her and starting conversations that can range from what we had for lunch to philosophy to which pens are the best.
Last but 'curtain lay' not least is Mrs. Lingenhoel, who has mentored me in music and musical work since I was a freshmen, letting me help with middle school musicals and giving me a chance in Honors Choir. She has always seen the best in me and has pushed me to reach for it as well, even if it stands far from my comfort zone.
What’s your favorite thing or memory about ICSB?
Junior year middle school musical we were down in the basement, me and all the helpers, working on paining the new set. We all got covered in paint and were presenting to be different animals without painting techniques and were laughing the whole time. In that moment, the backstage crew was a group of teenagers having fun and getting things done in a free, hilarious way.
What is an experience you’ve had at ICSB that you couldn’t have had anywhere else?
The close-knit community.
What are some of the ways you’ve grown since you first came to ICSB?
I have definitely grown in self and social confidence. I feel much more comfortable joining and initiating conversations and just being comfortable with other people.
What are your plans for the future?
I am taking a gap year. Currently the plan is to spend some time interning at a school in Africa before doing a semester at L'Abri. Hopefully this will work but with COVID, currently my plans are up in the air on whether they will work.
What is your dream job?
Either a professor in worldbuilding and creative writing, or a high school art teacher in the mission field.
