AP Language and Composition

AP Language and Composition

Due date: both assignments are due on the first day of AP Language and Composition class

ASSIGNMENT #1

I would like to note that the purpose behind reading the book "Thank you for Arguing" is not to follow its advice, we are reading this book in order to recognize and break down argument styles. The first half of the AP course is about identifying different forms of argument, analyzing them (looking particularly at how the audience is being manipulated), then to expose and break down those arguments.

My motivation for this choice in this book comes from 2 Cor. 10:5, taking captive every argument and making it obedient to Christ. We are inundated with worldly arguments on a daily basis attempting to influence our thinking and behavior. Recognizing how these arguments are crafted and delivered is essential in breaking down their deceptive power and empty promises. This book provides ample fodder for manipulative, yet effective, argument styles. You may strongly disagree with the author--and that's fantastic! Prepare to tell me why in September!
