AP English Literature and Composition
This summer reading assignment will help to prepare you for the kinds of texts you may encounter on the AP Literature & Composition exam next May, as well as for the areas of analysis that we will be doing in AP Lit.
- Complete the assignment for English 11/12.
- Read one of the following novels that you have not previously read (note: the texts marked with asterisks contain some adult content, but all of them are texts that appear frequently on AP exams. Talk to your parents for permission if you have concerns about the content):
- Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
- Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
- Kindred by Octavia Butler*
- The Awakening by Kate Chopin*
- All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
- Crime & Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky
- The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini*
- Create a 2-4-minute video “book talk” about the novel you choose from the list. Your book talk should include the premise and major characters of the book, the key conflicts (without spoilers!), and who you would recommend the book to. Essentially, you are promoting the book to others who might be interested in reading it. See this document for more guidelines.
- Complete this document for the novel you chose in part 2. This will serve as a foundation for your AP Lit exam study guide in May.
